Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula)
- HABITAT -Common Grackles are highly adaptable when n comes to their habitat. From wetlands and forests to parking lots and backyard feeders, grackles thrive just about anywhere humans live. They are common across much of eastern and central North America
- DIET - Grackles eat just about anything — insects, seeds, berries, small fish, frogs, and even garbage scraps in urban areas. They’ve learned to open bags, scavenge picnic tables, and follow farm machinery for insects — clever and resourceful birds
- FACTS - Common Grackles are fascinating birds — often overlooked because of their abundance, but they’re actually quite remarkable once you get to know them.
- They sometimes let ants crawl on them or rub crushed ants on their feathers. Scientists think this helps clean off parasites or spread formic acid as a natural insect repellent. This is called anting.
- In our area, they are one of the first migrating birds to return. Although some people regard them as backyard pests, we always look forward to their return.
